Origin Story

Why We Built Gravalist:
The Origin of the Ultimate Companion App

It started somewhere between the grueling stretches of Transcontinental Race No. 9 and chasing fleeting cafe stops across the scorched gravel of Badlands in Spain.

We weren’t just riding; we were testing the limits of our bodies, our gear, and the technology that was supposed to get us to the finish line. Over the course of completing more than 20 major bikepacking rides spanning South Africa, Sri Lanka, Europe, and Japan, a persistent, frustrating pattern emerged.

"There is clearly something the traditional head unit doesn’t do."

Don't get us wrong, GPS computers are great at recording your power numbers and keeping a track line on a screen. But when you are days deep into an ultra-endurance event, you don't just need a line to follow. You need logistics. You need foresight.

Your smartphone is sitting right there in your jersey pocket. It has the processing power and connectivity to do it all, yet tapping into that potential currently requires a chaotic juggling act of multiple different apps. You check one app for the route, another for the wind direction, a third to find the next resupply, and a fourth to calculate your ETA.

The Racing Dilemma: Staying Present

When you are racing, every second of cognitive load takes away from your physical output. You simply cannot race effectively if you are constantly stressing over critical information. How far until the next town? What is the upcoming weather front doing? What is my realistic ETA so I can plan my sleep strategy and resupply?

Without a unified view of these logistics, you are always planning, always worrying, and never truly present in the race itself. The mental fatigue of calculation often breaks riders long before their legs do.

The Bikepacking Reality: Challenge Meets Comfort

This isn't just about racing at the bleeding edge. When you are bikepacking, you want to push your boundaries and tackle challenging routes, but you also want a degree of comfort and predictability along the way. You want a companion that helps you make smart decisions—like knowing you have exactly two hours to beat a storm to the next mountain refuge.

Your phone is the most powerful tool you carry, but out on the trail, it simply hasn’t been utilized as it should be. It has been a fragmented experience that leaves riders frustrated when they should be focused.

This is exactly why we are building the Gravalist companion app.

We realized that to truly unlock the potential of gravel riding, ultra-racing, and bikepacking, we didn't need another clunky piece of hardware on our handlebars. We needed to transform the supercomputer in our pockets into an intelligent, unified companion.

Gravalist bridges the gap between raw navigation and actual journey management. It brings your route, your dynamic ETAs, the hyper-local weather, and your vital resupply logistics into a single, beautifully designed interface. It does the heavy lifting of calculating the unknown, so you can focus entirely on the ride.

We built this out of our own necessity across the globe's toughest terrain. Now, we're building it for you.
